•78%全球飼主希望新產品能延長毛孩壽命;
•飼主越來越重視毛孩從幼年、成犬到高齡階段的全程照護;
•腸道微生態(microbiome)與消化健康成為新關注點;
•「一種配方適合所有寵物」的思維正過時;
•消費者要求透明Ingredient產地與可追溯性;

Lausanne Biopôle

"Formulas suitable for dogs and cats of all ages" are outdated. Personalized care has become the trend!
[Industry Trend Observation] Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), the world's largest agricultural and food nutrition trading and processing company, not only operates its own pet nutrition laboratory and R&D center, but also provides raw materials and formulas to major global pet brands, with a presence in 160 countries. According to ADM's latest "Global Pet Nutrition Insights Report 2025," released in May of this year and data analysis, global pet nutrition trends are undergoing dramatic changes.
These core summaries include --
A. Nutritional requirements for pet health and longevity
•78% of pet owners worldwide hope that new products can extend the lifespan of their pets;
•Functionality, clean-label and truly natural fresh ingredients have become a new consumer consensus.
B. Nutritional Care Across Multiple Life Stages
• Owners are increasingly paying attention to the full-time care of their furry pets from puppyhood to adulthood and old age;
•Consumers not only want to address short-term symptoms, but also maintain long-term health through nutrition.
C. Functional health factors and intestinal health
• Gut microbiome and digestive health have become new areas of focus;
•It is recommended to combine it with a fiber diet to improve digestive efficiency during intestinal stabilization and environmental transition.
D. Customized nutrition: The one-size-fits-all approach is no longer popular
• The “one formula fits all” mentality is outdated;
•Personalized formulas are becoming a trend, including species, age, weight and health status.
E. Sustainability and sustainable consumption considerations
• Consumers demand transparency of ingredient origin and traceability;
•Sustainable and environmentally friendly processes will be the key to future competitiveness.
According to Technavio's December 2024 report, "US Fresh Pet Food Market Size," the US fresh pet food market is projected to grow by $3.2 billion between 2025 and 2029, representing a compound annual growth rate of 21.2%. Consequently, major pet food companies are capitalizing on this trend and launching new fresh pet food products to meet the growing demand from health-conscious pet owners.
ADM is also actively developing a transformation strategy, predicting that the global animal nutrition market will grow from $57.2 billion in 2024 to approximately $58.3 billion in 2025 and $67.2 billion in 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.8%. This year's report also includes the latest investment and research trends, including:
A. New Animal Health and Microbiology Research Center
• Location: Lausanne Biopôle, Switzerland
• Investment size: 1,600 square meters dedicated R&D center
• Research focus: Animal microbiome, fermented nutrients, and intestinal health technology, aiming to promote the development of new products for pet and livestock nutrition.
B. Mexico's first wet pet food factory
• Investment Amount: US$39 million
• Objective: To strengthen the wet food market in Mexico, introduce ADM formulas into local production, and improve the efficiency of the localized supply chain.
ADM is attempting to transform and develop in multiple aspects, including health, personalization, intestinal microorganisms, sustainability and lifestyle, indicating that the global pet nutrition chain is undergoing profound reconstruction.
Looking back at Taiwan, according to statistics from the Ministry of Finance, pet food retail sales declined between 2018 and 2019. Many veterinarians still advocate that owners feed their dogs and cats dry food throughout their lives to best meet their nutritional needs. Paradoxically, however, a growing number of international studies show that the rates of cancer, various major chronic diseases, and obesity in dogs and cats fed dry food for a long period of time are increasing, not decreasing.
This kind of food that claims to be "complete nutrition" is something that we, as people who value health and wellness, are unwilling to eat every meal, but we can accept that our family members and pets are encouraged to eat ultra-processed food all their lives?
Food is a vital signal to the body's cells, tissues, and molecular structures. It's more than just a source of energy and nutrients. These signals can influence gene behavior, determining how DNA translates into messages that affect bodily functions. This means we have the ability to alter DNA activity, especially for our pets and family members. This is also the core essence of epigenetics: diet and environment can control gene expression.
Asian countries have traditionally prioritized natural and healthy eating habits compared to those in Europe and the United States. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Kampo medicine, in particular, place a strong emphasis on dietary therapy and nourishment. Consequently, they have actually outpaced Europe and the United States in the development of fresh pet food. However, the rapid growth in Europe and the United States in both acceptance of fresh pet food and investment in related research and development is a cause for reflection.
