Research finds: 99% of dogs have behavioral problems!
The study, published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, used data from 43,517 dogs of varying breed, age, sex, size and location who participated in the Canine Aging Project in the United States.
These problematic behaviors include: being easily agitated, pacing, following and moving around the owner, sitting near the owner, trying to escape, and barking and chewing when left alone. This result shows that the presence of the owner can reduce the dog's emotional problems and can have a significant impact on its behavior.
However, according to research by animal behavior experts at the University of Lincoln in London, separation anxiety shouldn't be diagnosed as a single issue or factor, but rather is related to a variety of frustrations caused by multiple factors, including sensory stimulation, boredom, and frustration. They studied data from over 2,700 dogs from over 100 breeds and found four main ways dogs express distress when separated from their owners: wanting to run outside, wanting to touch something outdoors, reacting to external sounds or events, and feeling bored.
In addition, a new study published in Scientific Reports in May this year found that owners' work stress can affect their dogs at home.
The study, led by Tanya Mitropoulos and Allison Andrukonis, of 85 working dog owners, showed that pets showed more signs of stress when their owners were still immersed in work after get off work.
Studies have found that dogs with more stressful work lives tend to exhibit more stress-related behaviors. Sadly, owners often seem unaware of stress issues in their dogs. Even when their owners are overly focused on work, their dogs may become impatient, withdrawn, or forgo regular routines like walks and feedings.
These studies have proven that a dog's behavior and emotional regulation are the result of multi-faceted integration. They are not only closely related to the owner's emotions and human-dog interactions, but are also deeply integrated with feeding nutrition, environment, etc.
How can owners improve their dog's behavioral problems?
The latest experimental data published in the journal Nature in July this year on "Synchronous empathy between owners and dogs to enhance psychological benefits" shows that if owners practice "mindfulness meditation" around their dogs, it can significantly improve their sense of happiness, while also helping to stabilize their emotions and increase their life satisfaction.
Mindfulness involves fully focusing on the present moment, being aware of everything from your body's sensations to your surroundings. It's an innate ability that helps us regain our original focus and focus. This mindset can be activated through the presence of dogs, and has been shown to be extremely beneficial for children with autism in animal-assisted therapy.
Additionally, since dogs are naturally suited to group living, regular activity, social companionship, sniffing, and proper feeding are also crucial. Owners can utilize positive conditioning for interaction and training, prioritizing rewards and providing more comfort or massage to provide a sense of security.
Many things that we take for granted can be very sensitive to pets, easily causing them anxiety and stress. Examples include: meeting new people or other pets, encountering different surfaces when walking, the roughness of various transportation options, changes in living conditions or surroundings, sending pets to stay with friends or family, or simply playing with them.
Therefore, first and foremost, pet owners must learn to interpret their distress signals and understand which actions their pets display, potentially indicating symptoms of stress. Only by truly learning to get along with your pet can it better integrate into family relationships and life, preventing future illnesses and larger problems.
Of course, if you really can't balance work and life, it is recommended to find a well-trained person to assist you at home, rather than just considering the simple method of finding a "tool person" nearby to solve the basic needs of feeding and cleaning the cat litter. Don't just use pet-raising experience to measure professionalism and ability.
Don't overlook the possibility of choosing the wrong person. This will not only exacerbate your pet's anxiety and restlessness, but may even lead to harm and regret. Many pet owners often mistakenly assume that someone's perspectives and methods are correct simply based on their years of experience. You should evaluate a person based on comprehensive, long-term practical training, rigorous certification exams, comprehensive reporting, and a robust platform or headquarters support. Only then can they truly meet the needs of you and your pet, help them desensitize themselves, and provide them with exceptional service and experience.
