ree

Taiwan's first "furry baby housing assistant" provides nearly 20 housing services to singles and middle-aged people living alone

Aging, declining birthrates, and singlehood are the most important social issues and trends in countries around the world in recent years. These issues also come with the fact that pets raised by families may lack complete and proper care and nursing, leading to various behavioral problems, health disabilities, and long-term care needs.

According to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, Taiwan's household population has been declining annually, falling below three people for the first time in 2009 and reaching an average of 2.53 people in 2023. Data from the Executive Yuan's Gender Statistics Database indicates that the population of "single-person households" (people living independently) will reach 3.222 million nationwide in 2022, a 2.8% annual increase. Among the six major metropolitan areas, New Taipei City has the largest population, at 615,000, followed by Kaohsiung with 429,000 and Taipei with 413,000. This phenomenon is not unique to Taiwan; countries around the world are also experiencing the advent of a single-person society. The rise in single-person households is also driving a surge in pet ownership, impacting the pet care and pet product industries.

According to Euromonitor International's 2023 "Voice of the Consumer: Lifestyle Survey", 65% of respondents regarded their pets as family members. "When the status of pets is elevated to the level of family members, or even regarded as one's own children, people will naturally want to give them the best, and consumption upgrades will follow." Euromonitor International's pet market research data also found that since 2020, the average annual growth rate of spending per pet in Taiwan has reached double digits, gradually catching up with Asian cities with higher consumption levels such as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.

Currently, the entry threshold for pet sitters in Taiwan and other countries is low. Anyone who likes animals or has experience in animal care can provide services. Therefore, the service items are limited and the quality is uneven. They cannot simultaneously meet the needs of people and pets living together. This inevitably restricts development or causes accidents and consumer disputes, and even touches on legal gray areas. Therefore, how to provide upgraded services, ensure that personnel have long-term and complete professional training to meet the various needs of consumers, while taking into account management quality and creating a service system that focuses on home services will become the decisive factor for the next wave of great leap forward.

Furry care workers provide nearly 20 housing services for "families with pets", especially for singles, middle-aged people living alone, and small families, to reduce the burden on pet owners. They focus on customized, symbiotic home care for people and pets. This is most suitable for owners in this busy era where socializing and work occupy most of their time. It meets the situation where they cannot take care of their family's furry pets wholeheartedly, or when their furry pets have long-term care needs such as illness, aging, or disability, and need assistance to accompany them to medical treatment and give them appropriate respite time, so that they can receive safe and satisfactory care.

Customized services range from basic housekeeping to helping customers plan themed birthday parties for their pets, including venue layout, cakes, meals, and event design. We also assist families in planning pet-friendly itineraries, allowing owners to easily bring their pets on the road throughout the trip. We also prepare meals for family pets, provide a final farewell for pets, and assist in choosing appropriate funeral arrangements. We even assist single, elderly individuals with pre-notarized wills and entrustment of various funeral arrangements, such as pet care and burial services.

Our pet caregivers pioneered a "service tier system," providing differentiated services based on the completion of pre-employment and on-the-job training courses and their commitment to obtaining certifications. They also adopt a personalized time-based (3-hour) fee structure to better meet actual care needs, with no additional fees for any services within that timeframe. There are no restrictions on pet size, and there are no additional fees for pets under five. They cater not only to pets but also to owners, offering nearly 20 services such as basic housekeeping and catering. Every case and every entrustment is recorded, tracked, and updated to ensure families receive the most reassuring and satisfying care for their pets. Unlike current half-hourly rates, additional fees are charged based on pet size, number of pets, and the number of walks. However, the limited services offered make this a financially unaffordable option for many working pet owners in need.

In the past, pet owners seeking pet sitters would search online for a suitable schedule and budget through e-commerce platforms, then place an order directly. Their pet's needs and circumstances would require repeated explanation and adjustment with each placement. This approach was both cumbersome and worrying for owners, and even more stressful for sensitive pets. The Pet Caregiver role, modeled after Long-Term Care 2.0, incorporates a "case manager" role, serving as a bridge between owners and pet caregivers, and even the pets themselves. By patiently listening to the experiences of long-term pet caregivers and their pets' unmet needs, appropriate feedback is recorded and matched with competent pet caregivers to provide the necessary rehousing services.

Especially for families with multiple furry pets, each pet's personality, preferences, habits, constitution, symptoms, activity level, and feeding requirements vary. Personal trainers must meticulously record and inquire about every detail before relaying these to the pet caregivers and providing professional care recommendations. This ensures seamless, emotionally and physically supportive care for the pets, minimizing any potential adjustments in caregivers. The importance of personal trainers is particularly evident for pets prone to anxiety, those experiencing limited socialization, those experiencing advanced age, those with illnesses or disabilities, or those who have recently been adopted.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Finance, driven by an aging population and declining birthrates, the number of pet care service businesses has climbed from 1,516 in 2018 to 2,207 in 2012, a 46% increase, significantly outperforming the rest of the pet industry. However, traditional perceptions of service as "low-level" work—lacking professional expertise, lacking value, monotonous tasks, and a lack of opportunities for advancement—have led to talent loss and a chronic labor shortage. Addressing these long-standing challenges requires enhancing the value of work and providing professional skills training. This can reverse the current situation and create a new era of pet care talent. In particular, Ministry of Finance statistics show that since 2019, the proportion of individual businesses has surpassed that of companies, reaching 64% in 2012. This reflects both industry demand and the active participation of many pet owners in the market.

When individuals enter the market through part-time work or entrepreneurship, if they lack sufficient expertise, experience, and team resources, they will not only ultimately be unable to escape price competition and failure, but will also cause more consumers and pets to suffer, forming a vicious cycle. This is an issue that you and I must face and cannot be ignored.

Therefore, if you want to satisfy your sense of achievement but don’t want to spend most of your life on it, Maohai Home Service will teach you how to move towards providing high-quality, customized and diversified operations, while simultaneously enhancing the quality and quantity of your own abilities to operate, improve conditions, increase income, provide graduation guidance and open a new business, so that more people can see the value of your service and realize your dream.
