Challenges and Positioning of the Pet Industry in the Face of Economic Impact in 2025

The economic situation in 2025 is like a swirling storm. It makes people uneasy, but forces them to stop and rethink: What do we really need?

At a time when the world is facing the impact of US tariffs, persistent high inflation, geopolitical tensions, and slowing regional economic growth—many households are reviewing their spending, domestic demand is weakening, and the rhythm of life is changing. According to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) updated forecast for 2025, global economic growth is projected at 3.0% (lower than the past average), leaving the market with risks. While the pet industry shows no signs of fatigue, some sectors are actually experiencing growth against the trend. All of this is closely related to who we trust.

[01] In this era of shrinking consumption, who is still willing to spend money on their pets?

According to an OECD report for the second quarter of 2025, global household consumption growth averaged only 1.2%, a nearly decade-low. When carefully choosing their spending, pet-owning families often prioritize non-essential items over essentials—especially pet accessories, entertainment accessories, and overly packaged luxury services.

The Tokyo Animal Economics Research Institute in Japan pointed out that from the end of 2024, the exit rate of Japan's mid-to-high-priced pet grooming industry will increase to 23%, and the occupancy rate of high-end pet hotels in South Korea will also fluctuate greatly.

Although overall pet-related spending is still growing, consumer behavior is becoming more conservative and rational. In particular, the stock prices of US retailers such as Chewy and Petco have fallen by more than 70% from their peak, reflecting a significant decline in demand for high-end, non-essential pet products.

But at the same time, products and services related to "health" and "daily life" have grown steadily against the trend.

Euromonitor reports that the global pet care market will exceed $200 billion in 2024, with revenue continuing to rise in major cities. Fortune Business Insights also reports that the pet care market is projected to grow from $259.3 billion in 2024 to $273.4 billion in 2025, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 6.6% from 2025 to 2032. The APAC region is expected to reach approximately $29 billion in 2024, with future growth rates exceeding the global average, with Thailand and India showing particular potential.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Finance, Taiwan's commercial market for pet care services grew 46% from 2018 to 2012. Since 2019, the proportion of individual businesses has surpassed that of businesses, rising to 64% in 2012. This reflects both industry demand and the active participation of many pet owners in the market.

【02】Demand for pet preventive care continues to rise

In an economically conservative atmosphere, the trend of treating pets as "members of the family" has not subsided. Instead, people are paying more attention to their health and stable companionship, and are more willing to invest in functional products and services such as fresh food, nutritional supplements, health monitoring and long-term care.

Packaged Facts, a US market research firm, announced that in the first half of 2025, the pet health products and fresh food market will still have an annual growth rate of more than 7%, especially in the areas of "gastrointestinal health", "emotional stability" and "individualized dietary adjustment".

In Taiwan, we also see more pet owners choosing to learn “how to take care of their pets themselves” rather than just relying on product sales.

【03】On the contrary, more than half of pet owners refuse medical treatment due to high medical expenses.

According to a survey conducted by PetSmart Charities and Gallup from the end of 2024 to the beginning of 2025, a total of 2,498 American dog and cat owners were interviewed, of which 52% had refused or missed pet medical treatment due to cost issues. The article showed that 71% avoided treatment because they believed it was unaffordable or not cost-effective, and 14% of owners said that their pets' conditions worsened or even died after avoiding treatment.

Studies and reports indicate that pet healthcare costs are increasing at an annual rate of over 5-6%, exceeding the general inflation rate. Reports from the UK and Australia also indicate that pet healthcare prices have risen by 70% to 105% over the past four years. For example, a cat's surgery can cost up to £8,000 (still £13,000 after insurance compensation).

【04】The trend of strengthening professional skills training is quietly expanding

In addition to pet owners, another group of people are also quietly turning to the pet industry - those who are considering changing jobs, switching jobs, or improving their self-worth.

The recession has led to intensified competition in the job market, causing many young people who were originally working in fields such as human healthcare, food nutrition, and the catering service industry to seek new professional skills. Among them, the demand for "lifestyle professions" such as pet diet, behavioral training, and home companion care has increased significantly.

When "certificates" and "learning" become the focus, choice becomes particularly important.

A student at Pet Love, who later joined the Furry Home Service, shared, "I found a lot of pet-related courses online, but many were just video packages or focused heavily on academic theory, missing the crucial practical skills. Later, when I started providing home service, I realized that it's not just about knowledge and skills, but also about having someone willing to patiently guide you step by step, even accompanying you when necessary, and understanding how to respond and resolve customers' concerns. That's something you can only learn here."

It is recommended that those who are interested in learning should compare the following when choosing a learning platform:

✅ Do you hire a professional instructor and focus on practical and simulation exercises?

✅ Are there any ongoing guidance and review and auditing benefits provided after graduation?

✅ Is there a practical extension of the case matching and growth discussion community?

✅ Are the certification exams for the courses just a formality, consisting mainly of past exam questions?

Because adult education should help us become more reliable people in life, not just provide us with learning experiences.

【05】From Family Economy to Trust Economy

From the global to the local, we observe a common point: what people want is not more, but more peace of mind and trust.

The pet industry is no longer just about cute pet opportunities or the companionship economy; it needs to satisfy consumers from the perspective of customer lifetime value. This is especially true as the industry moves towards the next generation of "health, companionship, and professionalism." The "Trust Economy" has become the new axis of pet care.

When healthcare becomes unaffordable, information becomes overwhelming, and marketing jargon becomes overused, consumers are beginning to rely on "trust" as the basis for their choices. This also reminds us that business operations should return to the most fundamental question: Who do consumers trust to care for their beloved family members and pets?

The future pet market will no longer be about "cuter" or "higher price," but about "more trustworthy." This trust is built on knowledge, companionship, experience, and sincere responses. Only by returning to this essence can we go further together and provide lifelong care.

p'adore combines years of educational experience, care expertise, and digital innovation to provide diverse partnership models to help pet brands strengthen customer relationships, enhance brand power and product value, and further build a high level of loyalty and trust among pet owners. It is definitely your first choice for self-improvement.
