Skin Problem Feeding Lazy Pack - Part 2
★The skin is the largest organ in an animal's body
With the arrival of summer, many pet owners worry about their pets getting too hot and will shave them or bathe them more frequently to combat the rising temperatures. However, dogs regulate their body temperature by panting and flailing their tongues. Their fur not only protects them but also regulates their body temperature. Their skin has a protective oil layer on the surface, and excessive washing can remove this oil, leaving the fur rough and more susceptible to external irritation and inflammation. Therefore, dogs are prone to skin diseases if they are exposed to constant humidity and stuffiness during the summer.
The skin of animals is integrated with their nervous system. Therefore, skin health issues are an outward reflection of internal organ function, blood circulation, metabolic status, and changes in mental and emotional state.
According to the Five Elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lungs and large intestine are interconnected, and their coat and skin are also deeply connected. When a pet's gastrointestinal system is not healthy, the lungs and airways are easily affected, and skin problems can follow. This is especially true for dogs who experience chronic insecurity, separation anxiety, or a feeling of inadequate attention from their owners. The accumulated stress and emotions can lead to gastrointestinal imbalances, a tendency to lick their feet or skin, and potentially problems like interdigital inflammation.
★Improve hair loss, hair removal and less hair volume of furry children
Because of seasonal changes or skin diseases, pets often have their hair flying all over the house, causing headaches for their owners.
Basically, the reasons why dogs are prone to excessive hair loss include long-term malnutrition or imbalance, skin diseases or parasitic infections, excessive salt intake, lack of sunlight, too many baths, allergies to lotions, and excessive anxiety, etc.
From the perspective of both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Veterinary Medicine, elderly dogs, those with chronic or serious illnesses, or those suffering from Qi deficiency, blood deficiency, blood stasis, Qi stagnation, or damp-heat constitutions are more susceptible to skin problems and hair loss. Therefore, in addition to maintaining a balanced diet, owners should also be mindful of excessive salt content in their feed or fresh food.
Moderate feeding of foods that help hair grow, become fluffy, and shiny can help improve symptoms. Here are some common fresh foods that can help your furry friends:
1. Spinach
Rich in various nutrients and vitamin E, it maintains skin health and prevents hair loss.
2. Seaweed and kelp
Rich in minerals, vitamins, and iodine, it's essential for hair growth and helps stimulate metabolism and growth hormone secretion. When feeding dogs and cats, be sure to use the right amount and chop it finely for easier digestion.
3. Cooked sesame seeds
Contains precious sesamin, which is very effective for hair growth, hair loss and hair color, and contains tryptophan and lecithin to maintain healthy skin and hair.
4. Cereals
The main component of hair is keratin in protein, and millet, oats, buckwheat, etc. are rich in amino acids, which help keratin synthesis and inhibit skin spots.
5. Beans
It is rich in vitamin B6, folic acid, and minerals such as magnesium, sulfur, and zinc, which can keep the hair shiny and prevent premature aging, graying, and hair loss.
6. Boiled eggs
Contains zinc, selenium, sulfur, and iron, which promote hair health and growth. Never feed raw eggs to your pet. Besides the risk of salmonella infection, the uncooked egg whites contain avidin, which inhibits the absorption of biotin.
7. Milk
Containing calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, it not only strengthens bones but also enhances hair toughness. If your pet has a lactose intolerance or allergy, dark green leafy vegetables can be substituted.
8. Omega-3-rich foods
Such as salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel, etc., which help the growth of animal fur.
★ Understand your pet’s physical needs and take appropriate care of them
Like humans, pets' constitutions change with time, age, season, diet, and lifestyle, often with complex physical needs. Therefore, as a loving pet owner, it's crucial to first understand the basic requirements based on your pet's nature. Then, based on individual physical differences, you should tailor nutrition and food properties to your pet's individual needs, and then adjust your diet according to the seasons.
Dogs and cats, in particular, have different nutritional needs and natural preferences, so they can't be treated the same way or with the same feeding habits. For example, cats are carnivores, requiring 1.5-2 times as much protein as dogs. Their intestines are only half as long, their stomachs are smaller, and their mouths are limited to biting and licking. Therefore, the variety of food they offer should be limited, and soft, cooked, pureed foods should be provided as much as possible for easier digestion. When choosing food, they should prioritize aroma, saltiness, and umami. Small, frequent meals are also recommended, as should the portion size and frequency of feeding.
Furthermore, owners should avoid overly believing that expensive beef, lamb, or rare ingredients, or high-priced wet or dry food, will solve their pet's coat problems. These foods can worsen their coat or even cause allergies. Instead, they should try to identify the root cause of their pet's skin problems and learn dietary and cooking techniques to more effectively and comprehensively improve their symptoms.
